Ancient scared city, city of Lord Shiva Ujjain is
one of four cities where Kumbh Mela is arranged.
Religious importance of popular pilgrimage city
Ujjain increases with the presence of one of
twelve Jyotirlingas. In the ancient times city was
known as Ujjayani and was source of the basic
reference of Hindu panchang as the city is
Greenwich of India. Famous King Vikaramditya and
legendry poet Mahakavi Kalidas were also
associated with city. Ujjayani was all important
trade and commerce center as Ujjain was on the
trade route joining the north and the south, the
east and the west. This ancient city also witness
the expansion of Buddhism and Jainism in the
central India. Mahakaleshwar temple is the prime
religious place in the city, Temple here is unique
and only of its kind because here idol of Lord
Shiva is Dakshanmukhi [South facing]. Ujjain is
also famous for historic and ancient monuments
reflecting Indian and Persian architecture. |
